During their engagement interview, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spoke a little about the big moments from the beginning of their relationship—the first date, the first big trip, etc. But royal reporter Omid Scobie just shared a sweet detail on Yahoo! UK’s Royal Box about how the couple maintained their long distance romance day-to-day when Meghan lived in Toronto and Harry was in London. There was lots of texting and Instagram direct messaging…something exceptional given Harry does not have an official Instagram account, just the Kensington Palace account he shares with Kate, William, and Meghan that is run by their staff. This was back in the day when Meghan Markle still had her personal Instagram account and her lifestyle blog The Tig.
“A lot of their early days were spent DMing and texting back and forth,” Scobie said. “Harry loves to use emoji apparently, a lot of emojis.” Someone please ask Harry his favorite emoji (the new redhead one?) if ever given the chance.
Scobie added that Harry, who once had a secret Facebook account, does have accounts on social media. “We know that Prince Harry has a secret Instagram account, we know that Prince Harry is on Twitter,” he said, adding that Harry told him that he followed some royal reporters. “Prince Harry told me that he follows a lot of the royal correspondents on Twitter to see what they’re up to. I think he does pay attention to what’s being written about him and, of course, now his wife.”
Meghan and Harry talked in their engagement interview about dealing with the long distance. The two did not talk about any emoji texts there, but Meghan did make it clear they put a lot of effort into building their relationship. “It was just a choice, right? I think that very early on when we realized we were going to commit to each other, we had to invest the time and the energy to make that happen,” Meghan said.
